VAL D’ADIGE: Start of the vegetable harvest - 40 years of "asparagus season" with "asparagus board" - supporting program with Sunday on the bike.
 
TERLANO. High temperatures accelerated growth. This enabled 13 Terlano asparagus farmers to start harvesting. They cultivate high-quality asparagus on an area of 10 hectares. “Vegetables thrive particularly well on the sandy and humus-rich soil of the Adige Valley. The mild climate helps the Margarete asparagus to develop a characteristically delicate, nutty taste,” says Manfred Koroschetz, the coordinator of the Terlano Margarete asparagus.
 
The asparagus from Terlano and the surrounding area is freshly harvested by hand every day and delivered to cold storage within 2 hours. “This year we are within the long-term average for the start of the harvest. We hope that there will be no severe frosty nights or even a cold snap in the next few days and weeks,” says Koroschetz. That would reduce the yield.

During the "asparagus season", which ends on May 21, seven Terlano asparagus hosts offer typical asparagus dishes, which can be accompanied with the exclusively bottled asparagus wine, a Sauvignon Blanc, from the Terlano winery.
 
For the 40th anniversary of the "asparagus season", the "Terlaner Spargeltafel" celebrates its premiere: the winery is transformed into a culinary table with a 5-course menu with wine accompaniment. Locals and visitors can experience culinary asparagus hikes as part of the supporting programme. "On asparagus bike tours, those interested can cycle from Terlano via Vilpiano to an asparagus field, enjoy Terlano wine and asparagus appetizers in the Terlano winery and an asparagus lunch in a restaurant," says Terlano's HGV local chairman Michael Fontana.
 
Yoga is offered in the asparagus field for the first time. A cooking course on asparagus is also new and is being held with master chef Helmut Bachmann in the Gustelier workshop in Bozen. At the end of the "asparagus season" the “Radlsonntag”, a Sunday on bicycles, takes place on Sunday, May 21st.
